Why it resets
A new CMO is hired to change something. That's the job. And until they decide otherwise, you're part of the old way of doing things. That's not personal. It's the new broom problem. New brooms sweep.
Three moves. That's the lot.
01. Profile them. Where did they come from? What did they change there? Which agencies did they use? Ten minutes on LinkedIn tells you a lot.
02. Ask what they were hired to change. Not what they think of your work. What the board wants from them in their first year.
03. Bring a plan for their first 90 days. Not a report on your last twelve months. They don't care about your history yet. They care about their future.
How to show up
Honest. Frank. Curious. Not defensive. A big gesture is good. Expensive theatre is not.
The one line to remember
When the CMO changes, the account resets. Treat it like a pitch you're already halfway through winning.
Hope that helps.
